How Many Pay Periods Are in 2027?
It depends on your pay frequency and, for weekly and biweekly pay, on which weekday you are paid. Here is every case for 2027.
| Pay frequency | Pay periods in 2027 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Biweekly (every other Friday) | 27 or 26 | 27 if your first 2027 payday is Jan 1 (26 actually paid inside 2027 after holiday shifts); 26 if it is Jan 8. |
| Biweekly (other weekdays) | 26 or 27 | 27 only if your payday weekday is the same as January 1, 2027 (Friday). |
| Weekly (every Friday) | 53 | 53 Fridays in 2027. |
| Semi-monthly (15th and last day) | 24 | Always 24, regardless of the year. |
| Monthly | 12 | Always 12. |
What a 27-pay-period year means
If you divide an annual salary by 26 and pay that amount 27 times, you overpay by one period (about 3.85%). Employers handle this in one of three ways: pay the extra check and accept the cost; divide the annual salary by 27 for that year so each check is slightly smaller; or treat the extra period as unpaid and skip it (rare, and risky under wage-and-hour rules). Whichever way you choose, communicate it before the first paycheck of the year.
Also check: per-paycheck benefit deductions (health insurance, 401(k) percentage, HSA) will be taken 27 times; annual contribution limits may be hit a period early; and the first check, if paid on December 31 of the prior year, belongs on the prior year's W-2.
How the count is determined
A normal year has 365 days = 52 weeks + 1 day, so every weekday occurs 52 times except the weekday of January 1, which occurs 53 times (in a leap year, January 1 and January 2 both get 53). Weekly pay on that weekday means 53 paychecks; biweekly pay on that weekday means 27 if the first payday of the year is January 1 itself, otherwise 26.
